Lot 299, Signed T.S. Eliot material including handwritten letter

Including an unusual hand-written letter, a personally inscribed 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats', a signed playbill for 'The Elder Statesman', and a typed letter detailing Eliot's writing process for the latter. The letters were addressed and the signed material gifted to his secretary at Faber & Faber, Mrs. Susan MacEwan, to whom 'Old Possum's Book' is inscribed on the occasion of her wedding. Our book specialist Jenny Low said, 'We couldn't ask for better provenance - all of this material comes directly from Susan MacEwan, who has consigned it for auction via her daughter.'

Illustrated by Cheltenham's Arctic hero Edward Wilson, who perished alongside Scott, the work is in two volumes, and remains an important source for the doomed expedition.
