New Sale – Modern Art and Design in Cheltenham

Oil on canvas , John Elwyn est £1000-£2000

A new venture for The Cotswold Auction Company will be an evening sale of contemporary and twentieth century works of art on 7th July. Inspired by the recent surge of interest in this market auctioneers Elizabeth Poole and Lindsey Braune have introduced a new specialism into their range of sales. Paintings will feature largely in the sale, but there will also be ceramics, glass and furniture. Twentieth century Cotswold School furniture is always highly sought after.

One of the principal artists featured in this auction is the Welsh painter John Elwyn, who was born in Newcastle in 1916 and only died at the end of the last century in 1997 in Southampton. He is particularly noted for landscapes, often with graphic black outlines, and also for life drawing in which he was trained early in his career. It is however a landscape which is represented in this auction – one which features a farm building nestled in a rocky landscape with mountains in the distance under a blue/grey sky with a hint of sunshine. Although his work regularly fetches well into
the thousands the auctioneers have placed a conservative estimate of £1000-£2000 on this work .

From the same deceased estate comes a work by another artist born in 1916, Kit Barker (1916-1988). The artist lived in West Sussex at the end of his life but spent much of early life in Cornwall and in New York and San Francisco, where he mixed with an influential group of artists and critics, becoming a friend of the former owner of the works entered in this auction. Several works by Barker which are on offer including the abstract
“African Protea” ( estimate £200-£300), “Sea and Cliffs” ( estimate £200-£400), and “ Castle on the Blwyd” signed and dated ’68, ( estimate £200-£400).

A charcoal sketch by the well known Ceri Richards (1903-1971) “ Three Cliffs Bay, Gower” dated ’68, is estimated £400-£600, while a striking wood and metal maquette by Bryan Kneale (born 1930) for a sculpture in Fenwick Place, Lambeth is set to realise £200-£300, although the auctioneers expect that his reputation may drive the price up with enough strong competition. Works by Fred Yates (1922-2008)always attract a strong response and a bold, signed coastal landscape , probably Cornwall, is estimated at £400-£600.
The sale will be on at view on Saturday 4th July 10am-1pm, Monday 6th July 10am-5pm and on the day of the sale from 2pm, prior to the auction, which will commence at 7pm.

Entries for this specialist sale are still being accepted and the auctioneers will be pleased to give estimates on art work, furniture and objets d’art .

Cameras set to Roll !

The Cotswold Auction Company are looking forward to an exciting and busy auction on the 2nd June at their Chapel Walk Saleroom, Cheltenham. David Dickinson and the Real Deal Team will be filming contributors and their lots during the day. Highlights coming under the hammer will include:- a Late Georgian painted wooden doll, which carries an estimate of £600-1000. Auctioneer Liz Poole spoke to the owner at the Monmouth dealer’s day and learnt of its long family history. The doll had been given to her by her grandmother and had previously been owned by her great- grandmother. After 40 years of sitting in a cabinet the doll is in excellent condition with its original hair and hopefully will create much heated bidding.

A silver mounted stationery box hallmarked London 1899 carries an estimate of £150-200 and was brought to the experts’ attention by a young lady from Herefordshire. Four delightful books about “Orlando the Marmalade Cat” will tempt cat lovers from far and wide with an estimate of £60-100. An interesting collection of framed WWII medals includes campaign stars, defence and war medals is are set to realise £150-200. Why not come and place a bid, enjoy the atmosphere and see a celebrity instead of watching him on the television?

The sale starts at 11am with viewing on Saturday 30th May 10am-1pm, Monday 1st June 10am-6pm and on morning of the sale from 9.30am
